A one vote margin: gave Oliver Cromwell control of England (1645), cost Charles I his head (1649), placed King George I on England's throne (1714), elected Thomas Jefferson our third president (1800), John Quincy Adams our 6th (1824), and later Rutherford B. Hayes (1876), admitted Texas to the United States (1845), approved the Declaration of War against Mexico (1846), made Adolph Hitler head of the Nazi party (1923), saved the Selective Service system just 12 weeks before Pearl Harbor (1941). A tie vote would have failed because there was no vice president to cast a tie-breaker.
