PRESS RELEASE 2004-08
CANTON--Bill
Bernstein (D-Dallas), candidate for U.S. Congress for the Fifth District, will
be guest speaker at the June general party meeting of the Democratic Party of
Van Zandt County on Tuesday, June 15.
Bernstein
serves as the Chairperson of the Cultural Diversity Committee of the Family
Violence Prevention Council, and twice served as Chairperson of the Domestic
Violence Committee for the Dallas County Community Plan. He is also Chair of the
Metroplex Refugee Network. His work is highly regarded and in his capacity as
Deputy Director of Mosaic Family Services, he was sent by the Department of
State to speak on the issues in relation to human trafficking at a conference in
Europe last September. He is currently the Deputy Director of Mosaic Family
Services, Inc., an agency serving refugee and immigrant communities.
He holds a
BA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MS in Counselor Education from the
University of North Texas and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. His family
has lived in Dallas since the 1880s. His father owned and ran a successful
business in Dallas for over 40 years.
Before
working at Mosaic Family Services Bill served as CEO at a mid-sized travel
agency in Dallas, managing personnel and operations.
"We need a
moderate voice in Congress who cares about representing the people of the Fifth
District and not just being a lap-dog for Tom DeLay," said Vince Leibowitz,
County Chairman of the democratic Party of Van Zandt County. "We are pleased
that Bill will be speaking to our group and are committed to sending him to
Congress this fall," he continued. "Bill reflects the values of the people of
Van Zandt County and East Texas far more than his freshman opponent, whose only
significant contribution to Congressional discourse has been his humorous quips
about the so-called 'Cheeseburger Bill,'" Leibowitz noted.
Van Zandt County was moved to the
Fifth District from the fourth after the Texas Legislature redistricted
congressional districts at the behest of U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay
(R-Sugar Land) in the summer of 2003. "It is one of the most nauseatingly
partisan activities the Texas Legislature has ever undertaken," Leibowitz said.
The public is invited to the meeting
to hear from the Fifth District's next congressman.
In addition to hearing from
Bernstein, final preparations for the county party's role in the upcoming 2004
State Convention of the Texas Democratic Party, the annual July 4 celebration in
Canton, and the Van Zandt County Fair will be discussed.
The meeting
will be Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the
American National Bank.
